Grey's Anatomy Season 21 Returns This Fall with Dramatic Twists

ABC has announced the premiere date for Grey’s Anatomy season 21, confirming when the beloved medical drama will return to our screens. After season 20 ended with significant upheavals for its central characters—like Meredith releasing her Alzheimer’s research online and Catherine firing Teddy, Amelia, and Owen—the future for many characters remains uncertain. Fans can look forward to a season full of drama and tension among the core professionals.

On Wednesday, July 10, ABC revealed that Grey’s Anatomy, which was renewed for its 21st season back in April, will return to US screens on Thursday, September 26. UK fans will be able to watch it on Disney+ shortly after.

This season, ABC has decided to move Grey’s Anatomy from its traditional 9 pm ET Thursday slot to a later 10 pm ET time, starting with the season 21 premiere.

ABC’s Thursday night lineup will kick off with season 8 of 9-1-1 at 8 pm ET, followed by Ryan Murphy’s new drama series Doctor Odyssey, starring Joshua Jackson and Don Johnson, at 9 pm ET, before Grey’s Anatomy airs at 10 pm ET.

In addition to Grey’s Anatomy, ABC has announced other premiere dates: Dancing with the Stars will return on Tuesday, September 17 at 8 pm ET, and Abbott Elementary will premiere on Wednesday, October 9 at 9:30 pm ET.

Producers of Grey’s Anatomy have agreed to a shorter 21st season, consisting of 18 episodes. Reports suggest that several long-time cast members will miss a few episodes each as a cost-cutting measure.

Jake Borelli and Midori Francis are set to return only on a short-term basis this fall to wrap up their characters’ storylines before exiting the series as regulars.

In exciting news for fans, Deadline reports that Ellen Pompeo will have an increased presence in season 21, though she won’t appear in every episode. She is expected to feature in at least seven episodes and possibly up to 14 of the 18-episode season.

Pompeo has been busy working on the upcoming Hulu limited series Natalia, which wrapped production the week of July 9. Grey’s Anatomy season 21 will begin production later this summer.

Pompeo stepped down as a series regular after season 19 but has continued to make guest appearances and narrate each new episode. Her increased involvement in season 21 promises to add even more excitement to the series as it continues to evolve and captivate its audience.
