The Green Lanterns are officially ready to shine again with HBO picking up “Lanterns,” the first live-action series created specifically for DC Studios under the leadership of co-chairmen/co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran. The series has been given an eight-episode, straight-to-series order, with Chris Mundy, known for “True Detective: Night Country” and “Ozark,” as the showrunner and executive producer.
Also joining the team are Damon Lindelof (famous for “Watchmen” and “The Leftovers”) and Tom King (known for “Mister Miracle” and “Supergirl”). Both will serve as executive producers and co-writers for “Lanterns” alongside Mundy. Warner Bros. TV is producing the series in collaboration with DC Studios and HBO, and it is based on the popular DC comic “Green Lantern.”
“Lanterns” will follow the story of Hal Jordan and John Stewart, two prominent members of the Green Lantern Corps. This intergalactic team is tasked with defending specific realms of the cosmos from evil using rings that grant an array of superhuman powers.

According to the logline, the series will see new recruit John Stewart and legendary Lantern Hal Jordan as “two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.”
In the comic books, Hal Jordan is a test pilot who was first brought to life on the big screen by Ryan Reynolds in the 2011 “Green Lantern” movie. John Stewart, a military veteran, stands out as one of DC’s first Black superheroes. Nathan Fillion is set to play another Green Lantern member, Guy Gardner, in James Gunn’s upcoming “Superman” movie, which will premiere in July 2025.
Casey Bloys, chairman/CEO of HBO and Max Content, expressed his excitement about reuniting with Chris Mundy and Damon Lindelof. He said:
“We are elated to be reuniting with both Chris Mundy and Damon Lindelof as they partner with Tom for this fresh take on DC’s ‘Green Lantern.’ As part of James and Peter’s vision for the DC Universe, this first new live-action series will mark an exciting new era.”

Gladiator II Trailer Set to Dominate Screens Alongside Deadpool & Wolverine!
Originally, “Lanterns” was planned to be a Max Original, under the previous strategy to place all Warner Bros.-originated I.P. under the Max label. However, in a delineation revelation by Bloys to Variety, significant projects like “Lanterns” will now be classified under the HBO Originals brand.
Gunn and Safran first announced their plans to create a “Green Lantern” series in January 2023, when they presented their initial slate of titles for film and TV. At that time, Safran described the project as “a huge HBO-quality event” that is “very much in the vein of ‘True Detective.’” This series replaces a separate “Green Lantern” project that had been in development with Berlanti Productions.
The first DC series under this new direction, the animated “Creature Commandos,” is expected to debut in late 2024, followed by Season 2 of “Peacemaker,” which Gunn created before taking the helm at DC Studios.
In a joint statement, Gunn and Safran said:
“We’re thrilled to bring this seminal DC title to HBO with Chris, Damon, and Tom at the helm. John Stewart and Hal Jordan are two of DC’s most compelling characters, and ‘Lanterns’ brings them to life in an original detective story that is a foundational part of the unified DCU we’re launching next summer with ‘Superman.’”
“Lanterns” promises to bring a fresh and exciting take on the beloved Green Lantern series, offering fans a thrilling new adventure with their favorite intergalactic heroes.
