Is There an Episode 9 of House of Dragon Season 2? Updates on Season 3 and More!

No, there’s no new episode of House of the Dragon season 2. Many fans are upset with how House of the Dragon season 2 concluded, leaving them feeling unsatisfied.

Even though it’s the same show, it’s hard to compare the first two seasons of House of the Dragon. While we’ve been referring to the first season as a setup for the Dance of the Dragons, the Targaryen civil war, after all is said and done with the second season, we’re not much further along in the story.

That’s not to say we disliked the second season — in fact, we enjoyed it overall. But we completely understand why fans are frustrated with the season 2 finale, which feels much more like a penultimate episode than a true season-ender.

To clear up any confusion, House of the Dragon season 2 came to a close one week ago, with its finale airing on Aug. 4. So, no, the new episode didn’t air on Aug. 11. And if you’re feeling let down, you’re not alone. The final episode doesn’t feel like a complete ending at all!

The last moments of episode 8 are basically a montage of setfinale up, with no real payoff in sight — likely not for another two years. While we did enjoy the episode on its own, the fact that it serves as the season makes it incredibly underwhelming and, frankly, disappointing.

Even though we knew there wouldn’t be a big battle in the season 2 finale — it was reported by Deadline that a “major battle” was moved from season 2 to season 3, likely the Battle of the Gullet — we were still hoping for an epic ending. This is Game of Thrones, after all!

There’s so much more to the show than just battles (though those are definitely a highlight). Sure, they left us with a cliffhanger, but with so little happening this season, we’re worried that many viewers might not stick around for season 3. And that would be a real shame.

As huge Game of Thrones fans, we’ll definitely be sticking around and can’t wait for the third season to premiere, even though it likely won’t be until 2026.

Showrunner Ryan Condal has confirmed that filming for the next installment will begin in early 2025, and given the scale of the production, it takes a long time to complete. There was about a two-year gap between seasons 1 and 2, and we expect a similar timeline between 2 and 3.
